(CBC) Nine migrants have been taken into custody by the Canada Border Services Agency at the Port of Montreal. Agency officials confirm the migrants were discovered and didn’t have any official documents when the Moroccan-based boat docked at the port from Casablanca at 2 a.m. Thursday.

“They are being detained because we are not certain of their identity,” CBSA Jacqueline Roby told The Canadian Press.

She said they have violated the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, and face an immigration hearing within 48 hours.

The stowaways were said to be in good health.

The agency said it’s not aware of any evidence that the men were hiding in shipping containers, as initially reported by some media.

Their capture came on the same day Prime Minister Stephen Harper reiterated a promise to introduce immigration measures this winter that would crack down on human smuggling.

The RCMP is assisting in the investigation.
