First Tamil migrant from the MV Sun Sea ordered deported

One Tamil migrant out of the hundreds who came ashore in B.C. last summer was ordered deported Tuesday after he was found by the Immigration and Refugee Board to have been a member of the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam from 1991 to 1996. During that time, the man — who can only be identified as B189 due to a publication ban — joined the Tamil Tigers’ naval wing and engaged in a three-hour battle with a Sri Lankan ship, during which he was shot in the leg, said IRB spokeswoman Melissa Anderson, who attended Tuesday’s hearing.

Tamil migrant with ties to rebel Tigers ordered released

The Immigration and Refugee Board ordered the release of a Tamil migrant Monday, just days after he was cleared of being a security threat to Canada. The man’s lawyer said the ruling raises questions about the strength of the government’s assertions that some of the 492 migrants who arrived on B.C.’s coast last summer aboard the MV Sun Sea are suspected terrorists.

B.C. border guard gets 2 years for sex assault

A former Surrey, B.C., border guard found guilty of sexually assaulting three women while he was on duty has been sentenced to two years less a day in jail. A B.C. Supreme Court judge in New Westminster also sentenced former Canada Border Services Agency agent Daniel Greenhalgh to three years probation. Crown prosecutor Winston Sayson said the sentence sends a strong message to people in positions of authority.
