Ottawa agrees to bring Abdelrazik home

A six-year ordeal may soon be over for a Montreal man stranded in Sudan after being falsely accused of terrorist ties. The Harper government said Thursday that it will comply with a court order to let Abousfian Abdelrazik return to Canada. Federal Court Justice Russel Zinn ruled this month that the government breached Mr. Abdelrazik’s constitutional rights by refusing to give him an emergency passport. Judge Zinn ordered him returned within 30 days.

MONTREAL — Lawyers for a Montreal man stranded in Sudan say Ottawa has until Friday to act on his case or face possible contempt of court charges. Abousfian Abdelrazik is still living in the lobby of the Canadian Embassy in Khartoum even though he had a plane ticket to return to Canada last Friday. A Federal Court justice ruled on June 4 the government breached Abdelrazik’s constitutional rights by not giving him an emergency passport to fly home.

CSIS beefs up screening for Tamil Tigers

Canada is boosting its immigration screening in Sri Lanka – shifting overseas CSIS agents from New Delhi to Colombo in a bid to keep defeated Tamil Tiger terrorists from landing here. In addition to moving agents from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and the Canada Border Services Agency from their posts in India, the federal immigration department is adding staff to manage the growing backlog of Sri Lankan visa requests.

Olympics Security Exercise by US

July 27-31 is the next big pre-Olympic military exercise. But it may not be anywhere near the Olympic city. That’s when the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is hosting National Level Exercise 2009. The full-scale exercise “will be the first major exercise conducted by the U.S. government that will focus exclusively on terrorism prevention and protection, as opposed to incident response and recovery,” according to a news release on the Federal Emergency Management Administration website.

Biometric security wave of future

The federal government plans to start fingerprinting applicants for temporary resident permits as early as 2011, Sun Media has learned.  By 2013, all prospective temporary residents, including those who apply for work permits or study permits, will have to submit fingerprints and photographs.
