Report: Action against Sun Peaks Resort

Posted by admin on Oct 22nd, 2005

On Saturday, October 22, No One is Illegal members in an unannounced action went to the Vancouver Snow Show to protest the occupation of Sun Peaks Ski resort on Secwepemc territories, land which has never been ceded, released, nor surrendered.

Sun peaks resort is located near Kamloops, British Columbia and is owned by Nippon Cable. Despite the fact that the United Nations has repeatedly condemned Canada for violating International Human Rights of Indigenous communities, Sun Peaks Ski Resort continues to abuse the rights of the Secwepemc people through the continuous expansion of its overpriced bed units and hotel chains such as Delta Hotels on the Secwepemc Territories.

Telegraph Elders,Tl’abânot’în Clan and Iskut First Nations Block the passage of heavy Industrial Equipment from entering the Sacred Headwaters:

Fortune Minerals plan to begin drilling for coal in the Kla-bon-a-tine Sacred Headwaters/Mount Klappan area hit a roadblock over the weekend. In a display of growing Tahltan unity in opposition to failed leadership, the Iskut First Nations, Telegraph Tahltan Elders and Tl’abânot’în families put up a Blockade at the junction of Hwy 37 and the Eulue Lake road in northern British Columbia on Saturday July 16, 2005. The Eulue lake road is the current access way into the Mount Klappan Coalfields.

On June 18, 2005 Fortune Minerals was given notice that their project infringed upon Tl’abânot’în Aboriginal Title and Rights when the company was granted tenure without honorable consultation with the family whose traditional territory the tenure is located on. Fortune mineral to date has not responded to the notice.

Sutikalh- Take Action to Stop Resort License

Posted by admin on Jul 18th, 2005

SUTIKALH- IT TAKES A WHOLE COMMUNITY TO STOP A SKI RESORT

There has been much pressure in the past week by the Stat’imc Nation to block the license extension at Cayoosh. In a recent update from Sutikalh camp, Rosalin Sam has requested supporters to contact the Environmental Assessment Office regarding the extension of a building certificate that was issued to Al Raine and Nancy Green-Raine to build Cayoosh Ski Resort in Melvin Creek in August 2000. The resort developers are being forced to apply for an extension since building has been substantially “behind schedule” due to the growing pressure against the resort and increasing support for the five-year camp at Sutikalh. The granting of this extension is dependent on another full Environmental Assessment of the development.

John Bones, the Environmental Assessment Officer, has specifically mentioned that he is waiting for more input about the resort from concerned community members. Although we realize that letter-writing campaigns are frequently viewed as being unsuccessful or that they do not make much of a difference, in this case, it is likely that such a campaign (coupled with the strength and conviction of the Sutikalh Camp) will have a significant impact on the Environmental Assessment. We strongly urge people to take a minute to send a letter or fax (email is the least preferred method) to John Bones stating your opposition to the Cayoosh SkiResort.
