For anyone who still maintains any illusions of Olympic prosperity, an updated Olympic budget released by Vanoc last week made clear that there is no projected potential Olympic profit. According to John Furlong, “We will be very happy to get to break-even.” With sponsors such as GM and Nortel in crisis, the financial stability of the Games has been a controversy. Although $950 million in corporate sponsorships is expected, only $365 million has been collected. A Vanoc line of credit with sponsor RBC was cut by $65 million. The IOC has still not signed two of its top sponsors, resulting in another $30 million shortfall.

Canadian National Railway is suing Shawn Brant, Jason Maracle, and Tara Green as well as their families and community (Jane and John Doe, also named in the suit). CN’s lawsuit is a response to a blockade on CN tracks during April 2007, and another lawsuit against Shawn Brant for a blockade on June 29, 2007. CN has not yet specified the amount in damages they are seeking.

The roadblock set for April 1st, has been halted due to the spiritual protocol and through direction of the Spiritual Advisors. Action will commence when ceremony is closed. The sacred fire has been lit for eleven days. Reburial was announced for Friday, and the message will be delivered by the people on the actions to follow. Since CP Rail has begun expanding the railway lines, hundreds of artifacts have been uncovered. Stop all expansion and further development, in respect to the Ancestors, and our traditional way of life.

In an aggressive response to a series of train-track blockades in 2007, Canadian National Railways is suing three aboriginal activists for disrupting its flow of business. CN alleges the blockades intimidated employees, dislocated the flow of rail traffic, precipitated layoffs and caused “significant economic damages due to compounded delays in delivery of bulk commodities and goods.” However, an aboriginal leader targeted in the lawsuit, Shawn Brant, said yesterday that CN is naive to believe heavy-handed legal action will deter activists from protesting its role in wrongfully expropriating and exploiting aboriginal land.

There are many reasons to protest the Olympic Games. It is a multi-billion dollar industry run by an elite clique who sell the five rings to the highest bidder, using sports as a commodity and a platform for corporate advertising. Their main goal is profit, in collaboration with their partners: government, local organizing committees, and corporations (construction, real estate, tourism, TV, and media, as well as sponsors).
