National Day of Action to Oppose New Security Certificates Legislation

Posted by admin on Oct 15th, 2007

This October, the Canadian government is planning on introducing new Security Certificate legislation when Parliament re-convenes in mid-October. In February 2007, as a direct result of a grassroots campaign led by Security Certificate detainees and their families, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that Security Certificates were unconstitutional. Rather than abolishing Security Certificate legislation, the Government is passing new legislation in an attempt to provide a veneer of legality to a fundamentally unjust process. The Secret Trial 5 have called for our solidarity in their ongoing struggle against racism, oppressive immigration controls, and expanding state surveillance and control.

IN VANCOUVER: Join us for Leafleting, Readings, and Creative Resistance. FRIDAY OCTOBER 19TH 4:30-6:30 PM. Broadway Skytrain Station, Commercial Drive. Organized by No One is Illegal-Vancouver and Siraat Collective.

EMERGENCY COMMUNITY FORUM ON RACISM, IMMIGRANTS, AND IMMIGRATION

Tuesday October 16, 2007 @ 6 pm. Philippine Women’s Centre. 451 Powell Street. Children welcome.

In light of increasing racial violence against immigrants, the normalizing of public racist discourse against immigrants, and escalating border and security measures that are disproportionately impacting racialized communities, we are organizing an emergency community forum and discussion. We strongly encourage all communities and individuals that are being impacted as well as all allies to attend in order to build a more broad-based and effective anti-racist movement.

Monday September 24th from 6-8 pm. SFU Harbour Centre, 515 West Hastings.

* Slideshow and short films straight from Montebello!
* Excerpts from Film “A View from the Summit” on the FTAA protests in Quebec City in 2001

August 20th was a continental day of action against the Security and Prosperity Partnership Agreement. In Montebello, approximately 2000-4000 protestors converged to oppose the Security and Prosperity Partnership Agreement and the meeting of Harper, Bush, and Calderon. Vancouver was documented as having the largest protest outside of Montebello, with approximately 600 people demonstrating their resistance throughout the day in a series of actions. The struggle against the SPP did not start on August 20th, nor should it have ended on August 20th.

Join us in short films, brief presentations, and open discussion on continuing the campaign to Scrap the SPP! For more information, email noii-van@resist.ca or call 778 885 0040

In the Shadow of 9/11

Posted by admin on Sep 8th, 2007

The STATUS Coalition invites you to a Symposium and Vigil: In the Shadow of 9-11: From Racialization to Security.

Tuesday September 11 at 7 pm. SFU Harbour Centre (515 West Hastings). Followed by a Vigil to Vancouver Art Gallery at 9:30 pm

9-11 should never be forgotten. One of them happened six years ago with three thousand lives lost. The day has also become a landmark, dividing the world between the war-ravaging US government and the people of the world on the other. The “War on Terrorism” has led to terror in millions of Iraqis and Afghanis whose lives and lands are being devastated by foreign occupations; while in the name of ‘national security’ Muslim, South Asian and Arab communities are increasingly being racially targeted and resistance movements locally and globally are being criminalized through unprecedented police and state powers.
