A coalition of eight immigrant, refugee and Latin American community groups have been denied participant status by the BC Coroners Service at the inquest into the tragic and shameful death of Lucia Vega Jimenez.

“This is a completely unreasonable decision by the BC Coroners Service. We informed the media about Lucia’s death, while the Canadian Border Services Agency hid the truth for one month. We gathered information, organized memorials, and pressed the government for justice. Given our active involvement every step of the way, we never imagined we would be excluded from this inquest, “ says journalist Karla Lottini.

Lucia Vega Jimenez was a 42-year Mexican hotel worker who died while under Canadian Border Service Agency’s custody in December 2013 after being turned over to immigration authorities by TransLink police. Just prior to her scheduled deportation to Mexico, she hung herself in cells at the Vancouver International Airport. She died eight days later, on December 28, 2013.

Osman Fernando de León Reyes, a 29-year old Guatemalan man, is facing deportation from Surrey next week. His lawyer is seeking a judicial stay order from the Federal Court of Canada to urgently stop his deportation so that Mr. Reyes is not separated from his family and not deported back to imminent danger in Guatemala.

Mr. Reyes has two Canadian-born children, Diahanara aged eight and Dilan aged three. His wife, Heidy Stephany Pinto Zepeda, is a permanent resident and works in the cleaning industry. She is extremely distraught about the separation the family will face as a result of his pending deportation. “I love my husband, I am so sad and disappointed that Canada is taking away my husband from my life and my kids lives. He is a good man and a lovely father, and I fear for his life if he is deported back to Guatemala,” says Heidy Stephany Pinto Zepeda.

Mr. Reyes is currently living with mental health issues in relation to the traumas he has experienced. According to Natalie Blair, a registered nurse who has worked with him, “With the threat of deportation looming, his health is being compromised and is at risk.”

The Mount Polley mine disaster is one of the biggest environmental disasters in modern Canadian history.

On August 4, the dam of a tailings pond breached from the Imperial Metals-operated Mount Polley mine on our Secwepemc territory at Yuct Ne Senxiymetkwe, releasing 2.5 billion gallons of contaminated water and 4.5 million cubic metres of metals-laden fine sand into Hazeltine Creek, Polley Lake and Quesnel Lake.

We, the Secwepemc Territorial Authority, under the authority of Secwepemc Natural Law, lit a sacred fire at the spill site as of Monday August 18 2014. ( For ongoing updates from Yuct Ne Senxiymetkwe Camp: https://www.facebook.com/yuctnesenxiymetkwecamp )

Yesterday a media leak revealed that immigration officials are recommending the removal of citizenship rights from babies born tonon-residents in Canada. This came on the heels of the racial profiling and arrest of 21 undocumented workers in Ontario this weekend. A network of immigrant and refugee groups is condemning both these developments as symptomatic of a “racist system of managed migration.”
