Remembering Nav: Honouring his Life, Questioning his Death

With Nav’s family members, community and you.

Naverone Christian Landon Woods was a young 23 year old Gitxsan man who was fatally shot by transit police on Dec 28, 2014. His family describes him as “truly a gentle spirit” who “was respectful to all he came into contact with.” Nav had a special bond with his family and “brought happiness and laughter wherever he went.”

His death at the hands of police was profoundly tragic. It was also incredibly troubling; raising many questions about the use of deadly force by police, the role of armed transit police on our public transit system, and the broader dynamics of racism and colonial violence.

At this vigil for Nav, we are honouring his life as we hear from his family and friends who knew him. All of us are disturbed by his fatal shooting and want to raise important questions about justice, dignity and equality that his killing by Transit police forces us to consider.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racism marks the anniversary of the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre in South Africa when police opened fire on hundreds of South Africans protesting against Apartheid’s passbook laws, killing 67 and wounding 186. Every year we join friends and allies around the world to mark this day and to speak the truth about racism.

Migrant Justice Workshop with Check Your Head

Posted by admin on Jan 21st, 2015

Over the past few years we have seen a rush of action – and victories – on migrant justice in Canada. In direct response to youth calling for education on this issue, No One Is Illegal (Vancouver Unceded Coast Salish Territories) is excited to partner with Check Your Head to deliver a popular education workshop on migrant justice!

The Migrant Justice workshop seeks to engage, activate, and empower people by giving them the tools to break down anti-migrant racism, colonial stereotypes, and understand Canada’s immigration system. No human being is illegal, and we need strong, dynamic, and active grassroots movements for migrant justice to make our movement a reality. Featuring arts-based activities, experiential learning from migrants and activists, and interactive histories, the Migrant Justice workshop is ready to be brought to you.

To book a FREE Migrant Justice workshop for your high school classroom or community group please call 604-685-6631 or online

Vancouver, Unceded Coast Salish Territories

We’re calling on members of our communities to come together for a discussion about the collaboration of Translink and Transit Police with CBSA. At the meeting, we hope to share experiences and develop ideas, strategies and solutions on how we can collectively reach our goals. Possible strategic actions could include flooding the Transit Police Public Board Meeting and creating canvassing teams for major transit hubs.
