CALL TO ACTION IN SUPPORT OF STATUS FOR KADER
Fax, Email and Call the Minister of Immigration
Abdelkader (“Kader”) Belaouni has now been in church sanctuary for one year. The church has become a prison to him as the government continues to stonewall his appeals for Permanent Resident status in Canada. It is very important at this time that government officials be reminded that Kader’s situation has not been resolved and that many individuals and organizations are actively supporting Kader’s struggle for status and are unhappy with the government’s lack of response.

On the day he was to be deported to Guatemala City, alleged war criminal Sergio Loreto Garcia went instead to San Lorenzo church in Toronto and refused to come out. Reluctant to violate the tradition of church sanctuary, immigration officers declined to enter the tiny Anglican parish to arrest Mr. Garcia and for two years he dwelled in the basement, untouchable. Then he made a fateful trip to Home Depot. On Sept. 24, the second anniversary of the day he had gone into hiding, Mr. Garcia drove a few blocks to the hardware store chain and was stopped for a minor traffic violation.

SANCTUARY: OF PAIN AND HOPE
Join us on Saturday August 26th @ 6 PM at St. Michael’s Anglican Church (409 East Broadway- just east of Main) for a night of dinner, music, poetry, films, and presentations to honour the two-year struggle of Amir Kazemian in sanctuary. Suggested donation $5-20 and all proceeds go to Amir.
Amir Kazemian has been seeking sanctuary in St Michaels Church in Vancouver since June 2004. Amir is a survivor of torture who came to Canada and filed a refugee claim in 1997. Amir fears for his life from the Iranian authorities due to his and his father’s political activities for human rights; for which they both faced imprisonment and torture.

Immigration rejection like a ‘killing,’ Portnoy says, CBC News
 Federal immigration authorities have rejected the humanitarian appeal of an Israeli family that had been campaigning to stay in a small Newfoundland town. “I can’t call it a decision. [It’s] a kind of killing,” said an emotional Angela Portnoy, who has been living in sanctuary with her four children in the basement of a Roman Catholic church in Marystown on Newfoundland’s south coast.

Church prepares for long stay by family in sanctuary. CBC News
The pastor of a Winnipeg church said Monday she’s preparing for a lengthy stay by a Pakistani family living in sanctuary there. The Raza family — Hassan Raza, his wife Sarfraz Kausar and their six children — took refuge in the Crescent Fort Rouge United Church Aug. 3. At the time, the family was threatened with deportation after a Federal Court judge rejected their refugee claim based on the threat of religious persecution in Pakistan.
