Church shields another refugee claimant. Ottawa Citizen
The First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa is providing sanctuary to another refugee claimant. Shree Kumar Rai, 44, a Nepalese citizen in Canada since 1996, was introduced at a news conference at the west-end Ottawa church Thursday morning. He has been in the church since Feb. 27. Members of the congregation, led by former Ontario NDP leader Michael Cassidy, believe Rai risks torture and police oppression if deported to his homeland.

After living for more than six months in a Winnipeg church, the children of a family seeking sanctuary from deportation are now allowed to attend public school. The four school-aged children of Hassan Raza and Sarfraz Kausar attended their first classes in the Louis Riel School Division on Friday, after receiving assurances that doing so will not open them up to detention by immigration authorities.

This is an URGENT email asking you to support Amir Kazemian. Amir is an Iranian refugee who has been in sanctuary at St. Michael’s Church in Vancouver since June 2004 – that is 2 years and 8 months. On the evening of Saturday, February 17th, Amir was arrested and detained by the Vancouver City Police and is being held in detention by Canadian Border Services Agency.

A Latvian man who has sought sanctuary in a St. John’s church for the past two years has learned federal authorities have rejected his claim to stay in Canada on compassionate and humanitarian grounds. Alexi Kolosov, who had been among the crew of a vessel abandoned in Argentia in 1999, is fighting a deportation order from Canadian immigration officials.
