In 2003, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) established its largest investigative and enforcement branch – the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement arm (ICE) “as a law enforcement agency for the post-9/11 era, to integrate enforcement authorities against criminal and terrorist activities, including the fights against human trafficking and smuggling violent transnational gangs and sexual predators on children (who are) criminal (and) terrorist” threats to the nation. Along with Muslims, Latinos are its prime targets, often using militarized unconstitutional tactics against vulnerable, defenseless people. Post-9/11, the Bush administration initiated them, and they continue under Obama.

Greek police flatten migrant camp

Greek riot police have led an operation to demolish a makeshift camp housing illegal immigrants in the western port city of Patras. The camp was used by migrants hoping to smuggle themselves onto ships bound for Italy and Western Europe. Its closure is more proof of Greece’s tougher stance on illegal immigration. The camp had been a source of tension with many Greeks who regarded it as a major eyesore for themselves and for tourists arriving from Italy.

Sink immigrants’ boats says British National Party leader

The EU should sink boats carrying illegal immigrants to prevent them entering Europe, British National Party leader Nick Griffin has told the BBC. The MEP for the North-West of England said the EU had to get “very tough” with migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. Pressed on what should happen to those on board, he said: “Throw them a life raft and they can go back to Libya”.

Italy adopts controversial law against illegal immigration

ROME – Italy adopted a tough law against illegal immigration on Thursday, including a measure allowing citizens to mount their own patrols, despite fierce criticism from rights groups and the Vatican. The European Commission announced it would examine the new measures to determine whether they comply with EU norms, warning that “automatic expulsion rules for entire categories are not acceptable.” Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi had made tougher immigration rules a cornerstone of the election campaign that saw him returned to power in May 2008.

Immigration’s Tough New Face

The federal government’s latest moves to step up deportations of foreign workers have solidified Canada’s fall from grace when it comes to our immigration policy. Coordinated raids throughout southern Ontario since May have already led to the arrest and deportation of at least 100 undocumented workers originating from places such as Thailand, Mexico, China, the Philippines and the Caribbean. Many more currently await their fate while in detention, according to No One Is Illegal, an immigrant rights organization monitoring the emerging situation. Interestingly, no charges have been laid against the employers.
