Conservatives order rewrite of ‘insipid’ citizenship guidebook

OTTAWA – The current guidebook for Canadian newcomers includes two pages on environmental stewardship and barely a mention of the Canadian military – and that has Jason Kenney hopping mad. Kenney, the Conservative minister of Citizenship and Immigration, has ordered an overhaul of the 12-year-old citizenship test and accompanying educational material. It’s part of a government push to foster greater integration of immigrants into the Canadian mosaic, Kenney told The Canadian Press in an interview.

Mexicans trying to immigrate ‘through the back door,’ says Kenney

Most Mexicans claiming refugee status in Canada are queue jumpers trying to “immigrate to Canada through the back door,” says Canada’s immigration minister. Jason Kenney, in Calgary Tuesday for a Chamber of Commerce speech, was commenting on a CBC News story about a growing number of Mexicans taking advantage of a new direct flight from Mexico City to Calgary to claim refugee status in the city. Nearly 10,000 Mexican nationals applied for refugee status in Canada last year, but most of those claims were rejected, he said.

Citizenship program should focus on ‘Canadian values,’ Kenney

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said his department is conducting a complete review of the citizenship program to improve its content, ‘with a focus on Canadian values.’ He made the comments in a luncheon speech to the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. The government wants to ensure that people becoming Canadian citizens have a full appreciation of the country’s values — such as rule of law and equality of men and women — as well as its symbols and institutions, he said. He said there would, for instance, be more Canadian history on applicants’ exams.

Ethnic communities should embrace Canadian values: Kenney

Canada needs to better integrate its ethnic minorities in order to combat the potential for extremism, says Canada’s immigration and multiculturalism minister.  In an interview with Sun Media, Jason Kenney said Canada’s high level of immigration runs the risk of creating “ethnic silos” that could do here what they have done in Europe.
