People’s March Against Jason Kenney on Sat July 24th at 2 pm, Central Park, Burnaby; Actions also taking place in Montreal, Halifax, Toronto, Winnipeg

Wednesday July 21, 2010, Vancouver– The refugee rights and migrant justice organization No One Is Illegal is organizing a nation-wide day of protest in five cities against Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney. According to Alex Mah of No One Is Illegal, “Jason Kenney is routinely called the Minister of Censorship and Deportation because of his record as one of the most repressive immigration ministers in Canadian history. But there is a growing grassroots movement across the country rising out of schools, neighbourhoods, and workplaces to reject Kenney’s oppressive and racist policies.”

Jason Kenney’s disposable workforce of temporary foreign labour

Jason Kenney’s disposable workforce of temporary foreign labour
By Usman Mushtaq | July 8, 2010, rabble.ca

Using the distraction of police violence against protesters that was on display at the G20 Summit marches in Toronto, the Canadian government once again affirmed their commitment to the movement of people across their borders only as cheap and replaceable labour. On Saturday, June 26, Citizenship and Immigration Canada announced changes to immigration policy that further restrict immigrants from obtaining residency in Canada through permanent and meaningful employment. This change follows a long line of policy changes that are designed to bring in more temporary migrants while restricting those and other migrants from having safe employment and a chance to obtain permanent residency in Canada.

Reportback: Kenney forced out of Slocan Park!

Last week No One Is Illegal was alerted by Filipino community members that Minister of Censorship and Deportation Jason Kenney was to speak at a Filipino Independence Day celebration on June 12, 2010. NOII members gathered at Slocan Park, handing out hundreds of leaflets to those in attendance, most of whom shared our disgust for Kenney. As Kenney took the stage to speak, he was repeatedly heckled and shamed, forcing him to cut his speech short and leave the stage. It appeared that the only people cheering for Kenney were his private security, Conservative politicians, and his mini entourage (who apparently think that Kenney is a ‘champion of the people’). As security tightened around Kenney, a few people continued jeering at Kenney – denouncing his racism, anti immigrant policies, growing rates of deportation, and exploitation of temporary workers. Kenney was then escorted out of the park by a group of RCMP officers as several people cheered “Shout at him more”. By the end of the afternoon, NOII had received messages such as this: “On behalf of Filipinos everywhere, thanks for helping keep Philippine Independence Day Kenney-free!”
