Given the magnitude of the job of changing public opinion, Lush’s week-long campaign on immigration in its 90 UK stores, which began on Monday, might seem inadequate. However, it is a brave stand, and any initiative that argues for the rationality and humanity of open borders is a welcome counter to the short-sighted, rightwing response to refugees fleeing Libya, Egypt and Tunisia, which is threatening to tear up the Schengen agreement for passport-free travel in mainland Europe.

The UN’s top human rights official has raised racism concerns over Australia’s policies towards asylum seekers and its treatment of its indigenous Aboriginal population. Long-standing policies of locking up asylum seekers had “cast a shadow over Australia’s human rights record”, and appeared to be completely arbitrary, Navi Pillay, the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, said on Wednesday at the end of a six-day visit to the country.

From May 13-16, I accompanied a delegation from Long Island to Tucson, Arizona, and Nogales, Mexico, where we learned firsthand about the ongoing humanitarian crisis on the U.S.-Mexico border, and the forces that drive people to undertake the journey north. The reality is stunning in sheer magnitude: Since 1994, there have been more than 6,000 confirmed deaths on the border.

In the midst of the European debate, a number of eminent personalities, led by former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer presented a report on May 11 called “Living Together: Combining Diversity and Freedom in 21st Century Europeâ€. The message of the report is that unless Europe learns to cultivate its diversity, it will always inevitably be at a demographic disadvantage. This is explained by a simple fact: without immigration, the active population will decline by a hundred million people in the next fifty years while the total population will increase and will age.
