Up to 50,000 Nigerians are among a record number of illegal immigrants deported by the United States in a new push by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to enforce immigration laws. The DHS, which described it as a “strict policy of arresting, prosecuting, and jailing†illegal immigrants, deported more than 280,000 in fiscal year 2007, compared with 186,000 in 2006. Immigration officials said it was the largest number of illegal immigrants ever removed from the country in a single year.

A Brampton couple and their two young children, one with Down’s syndrome, are scheduled for deportation next week and pleading with the federal government to reconsider the family’s expulsion. For the sake of their four-year-old Canadian-born son, Daniel and Veronica Carnales are asking Citizenship and Immigration Minister Diane Finley to intervene and exercise rarely used ministerial powers to stop their expulsion from Canada. The Carnales family, with sons Santiago, 11, and young Aaron, must leave the country by April 8. The Defence for Children International-Canada (DCI-Canada), Brampton-Springdale MP Ruby Dhalla and others in the community are rallying to the family’s aid. Petitions have collected more than 1,000 names.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Michael Chertoff previewed today a 19 percent increase over Fiscal Year (FY) 2008 in funding for border security and immigration enforcement efforts in FY 2009. This represents a more than 150 percent increase since President Bush has been in office, enabling the department to fulfill its border infrastructure, fencing and personnel goals by the end of 2008.

Libya would be violating international and domestic law if it goes ahead with plans to deport an estimated 1m illegal immigrants, Human Rights Watch says. The New York-based group said Libyan law prohibited deportation to countries where refugees may face persecution. A HRW spokesman told the BBC the Libyan leader may be reacting to pressure to stop Africans trying to reach Europe. The BBC’s Rana Jawad in the capital, Tripoli, says illegal immigrants are the backbone of the country’s economy. The European Union has urged North African countries to help stop the northward flow of African migrants. Last month, Italy and Libya agreed to set up joint coastal patrols.
