A North Vancouver Future Shop employee faces arrest and possible execution if an order for his deportation — which may take place as early as today (Oct. 12) — is carried out. Thirty-year-old Seyed Anari, known locally as Bob Anari, was arrested Thursday right after his bid to stay in Canada as a refugee was declined. Immigration officials plan to hold him in detention until they can put him on a plane to his native Iran, probably before the end of the weekend, said his lawyer, Blake Hobson.

GENEVA (Reuters) – The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights voiced concern on Thursday that increasing numbers of immigrants and asylum-seekers are being put behind bars in rich countries. Navanethem Pillay, a judge from South Africa, said they are among millions of people believed to be detained arbitrarily or unlawfully worldwide, with many held in inhumane conditions without facing charges. Pillay singled out the European Union, warning that its new rules on illegal immigration may spur abuses such as excessively long periods of detention.

The lawyer for a man who faces deportation this weekend is making a desperate bid to allow him to argue his case before a judge. Hamid Shemshad, 38, was taken into custody two weeks ago. If Shemshad is returned to Iran, he could face extreme consequences and even death for his political activities in his homeland and abroad, his Vancouver lawyer, Peter Edelmann, said yesterday.

Tuesday Sep 2, VANCOUVER – Local community groups and Iranian-Canadians are deeply concerned about the fate of Hamid Shemshad, an Iranian political dissident seeking asylum in Canada. Hamid is currently being held in detention and faces deportation to Iran on September 7, 2008. Hamid Shemshad has been an active student activist and political dissident against the Iranian government. In 1999 he was jailed in Iran for his political activities. His brother Jafar Shemshad was also a political activist against the Iranian government and was executed in 1988.

On Aug. 25, dozens of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested approximately 595 workers in a raid on an electric transformer manufacturing facility owned by Howard Industries, Inc. in Laurel, Mississippi, a town of 20,000. The agents sealed off all the plant’s exits, trapping workers inside, and executed a federal criminal search warrant for evidence relating to aggravated identity theft, fraudulent use of Social Security numbers and other crimes, as well as a civil search warrant looking for unauthorized immigrants.
