No One Is Illegal Vancouver Coast Salish Territories is an anti-colonial migrant justice collective. We are writing this statement only two weeks into the recent federal election, where Stephen Harper’s Conservatives attained a majority in Parliament. We understand that the whole electoral system is flawed – from the façade of choice in liberal democracies to the illegitimacy of the Canadian state that occupies Indigenous lands. We do not simply advocate for “better†politicians or laws. Nonetheless, the specific context of the Conservative government, who have been in power since 2006, requires us to analyze our strategies and our struggles accordingly.

Terrorism allegations against Tamil migrant dismissed

An Immigration Review Board adjudicator has dismissed allegations by the federal government that a Tamil migrant who arrived on a ship in Victoria last summer was part of a terrorist group. Leeann King ruled the man can make a refugee claim in Canada and she systematically dismantled the federal government’s evidence against him, calling the information trivial, unreliable and riddled with mistakes and speculation. “In this case, what [the man] has told officers and what he testified to before me about what happened to him in Sri Lanka is the only credible and trustworthy evidence before me,” she concluded in her ruling Thursday.

Police have arrested three refugee advocates who scaled the roof of the Federal Immigration Minister’s western Sydney electorate office. The protesters climbed onto the roof of Chris Bowen’s Fairfield office this morning in support of detainees at Villawood Detention Centre.

HIV patients at a London hospital have in effect been imprisoned following a move by immigration officials to secure the sexual health unit, NHS consultants claim. Hillingdon hospital in west London treats detainees at two immigration removal centres near Heathrow alongside other patients. The problems began when doctors refused to treat an HIV-positive detainee because the guard to whom he was handcuffed refused to uncuff him. An incident report was filed and sent to the medical director.

Human rights groups have questioned the legality of the French police’s arrests of migrants from Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. French police said they carried out the latest round of arrests on Wednesday night, detaining immigrants who were sleeping rough in parks in Paris and Marseille and drawing condemnation from rights groups.
