Independent Media Reporter Rejected at Border, Detained by Border Agents and Denied Outside Contact

Martin Macias Jr., an independent media reporter from Chicago traveling to cover the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver BC, has been rejected by Canadian border agents and held without outside contact for at least 7 hours (as of 9pm) today. Macias arrived in Vancouver from Chicago (via Minneapolis) on an 11:30am Delta Airlines flight on Saturday, February 6, 2010. He was detained for hours by Canada Border Services agents in the Vancouver International Airport and questioned about his plans during the Olympics. Ultimately he was refused entry to Canada.

Biometrics to Become Mandatory for all Visaholders

By 2011, international students intending to study in Canada will be expected to provide biometric-fingerprints and photos along with their application. This new plan will require digital fingerprints at the application period rather than at the entry stage. Although the new biometrics plan isn’t expected to be fully enforced until 2013, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) thinks that it will certainly help reduce identity theft and increase the safety and security of Canadians.

U.S., Canada will share refugee fingerprints

The United States says it will join Canada, Australia and Britain in sharing fingerprints and other data to help authorities discern people’s true identities in cracking down on asylum shopping and unlawful immigration. The program would allow governments to ferret out fraudulent refugee claimants by using fingerprinting and other methods to get details about identity, nationality, travel and immigration history. Canada and the U.S. conducted a trial run two years ago in which authorities exchanged fingerprints on 343 refugee claimants.

According to an article at Narcosphere: Indigenous Peoples living along the border in their traditional homelands, from California to Texas, continue to be harassed and intimidated by US federal agents, including the US Border Patrol, and local enforcement agencies working with Homeland Security. The situation has not improved under the Obama Administration.

RCMP seizes vessel carrying 76 off B.C. coast

An RCMP emergency response team boarded and took control of a vessel carrying 76 people off the British Columbia coast and piloted it to port on Saturday. The action capped a large-scale, two-day police and military operation that kicked into gear following a tip that the ship had sailed unannounced into Canadian waters. Assistant RCMP Commissioner Al MacIntyre said officials received reports on Thursday of a vessel in waters off Vancouver Island behaving in an inconsistent manner.
