Critics Call Secret U.S.-Canada Talks “End Run Around Democracy”

TORONTO – The just-announced Canada-U.S. security perimetre discussions are comprehensive and potentially wide-ranging and could impact Canadian sovereignty. However, the domestic opposition appears to have been caught off-guard. It is hard to fight a deal when Ottawa and Washington are offering few details, said Vancouver-based international lawyer, author and commentator Michael Byers in a recent interview with IPS. “The people who are opposed to this are left pointing at shadows rather than anything concrete,” he noted.

It is now over sixteen months since Mr. Abdelrazik returned to Canada after six years of exile – which included two years of arbitrary and abusive detention and a further year trapped within the Canadian consulate in Khartoum. As Federal Court judge Russell Zinn concluded, Mr. Abdelrazik’s initial detention probably took place at the request of CSIS, Canada’s spy agency.

Air Canada targets Yemeni passengers

Air Canada has ordered its staff to subject anyone connected to Yemen to undergo extra security checks after the discovery last week of two packages containing explosives that originated from the country. A memo, circulated at several major Canadian airports, directs Air Canada staff to take aside any passenger who was born or is a resident in Yemen, is travelling to or transiting through Yemen, or has started a trip in the country. The passenger, who will already have gone through normal security, will be taken to a so-called sterile area for a second and more thorough search.
