A coroner’s inquiry is taking place in Vancouver this week on Lucia Vega Jimenez’s suicide in Canadian Border Service Agency (CBSA) custody.

Immigration detainees are also on strike in Ontario, and a Red Cross investigation of CBSA facilities – described as dungeons by some lawyers – has just come to light. The Red Cross found over-crowding, inadequate mental health supports, a lack of support for detained children, and presence of mold in detention cells. Many of these shortcomings constitute a failure to comply with national and international standards.

For the first time in a long time, immigration detention is getting the scrutiny it deserves. In response, CBSA is trying to change tracks. Its most recent move is introducing the idea of electronic monitoring systems as an alternative to immigration detention.

As community members that work closely with immigration detainees, we believe electronic monitoring is not a just alternative to immigrant detention.

The Mount Polley mine disaster is one of the biggest environmental disasters in modern Canadian history.

On August 4, the dam of a tailings pond breached from the Imperial Metals-operated Mount Polley mine on our Secwepemc territory at Yuct Ne Senxiymetkwe, releasing 2.5 billion gallons of contaminated water and 4.5 million cubic metres of metals-laden fine sand into Hazeltine Creek, Polley Lake and Quesnel Lake.

We, the Secwepemc Territorial Authority, under the authority of Secwepemc Natural Law, lit a sacred fire at the spill site as of Monday August 18 2014. ( For ongoing updates from Yuct Ne Senxiymetkwe Camp: https://www.facebook.com/yuctnesenxiymetkwecamp )

Yesterday a media leak revealed that immigration officials are recommending the removal of citizenship rights from babies born tonon-residents in Canada. This came on the heels of the racial profiling and arrest of 21 undocumented workers in Ontario this weekend. A network of immigrant and refugee groups is condemning both these developments as symptomatic of a “racist system of managed migration.”

100th Anniversary of the Komagata Maru – Mass Rally

Canada Place
999 Canada Place, Vancouver,

This year marks the hundredth anniversary of an incident that occurred as a direct result of the racist policies of Canadian Government and the anti people laws it has enacted and enforced. The notorious “Continuous Passage Act of 1908” was one in a long list of such laws. These laws are also being enacted today, like bill C-24.

Passengers of the Komagata Maru endured ugly unwelcoming gestures upon their arrival in Canada, inhuman conditions while they awaited their fate in the waters of the Burrard Inlet, and death for 20 of them (a miserable life for the rest) on return.

The recent laws like the Super Visa (in the name of faster family reunification) and Bill C-24 (in the name of strengthening Canada’s citizenship act) are having devastating effects on the lives of Canadians.
