Armed Mohawk protesters barricaded a highway in eastern Ontario Thursday night, vowing to set up even more blockades as a national aboriginal day of action begins at midnight. About 40 protesters parked a schoolbus on Highway 2, near Deseronto, just before 9 p.m. ET, forcing traffic to stop and turn around at the location, which is about 50 kilometres west of Kingston.

Tyendinaga: CN Rail sues Ontario Mohawk protesters

CN Rail has launched a lawsuit against Mohawk protesters who blocked a major Ontario rail corridor for more than a day last month, disrupting freight and passenger traffic. The land dispute protest near Deseronto that began in the early hours of April 20 disrupted freight between Toronto and Montreal. The disruption blocked the transport of freight worth more than $100 million, said spokesman Mark Hallman.

Shawn Brant released on bail

NAPANEE — The spokesman in a Mohawk protest at a Deseronto quarry is out on bail on the condition he not participate in any unlawful protests. Shawn Brant has been ordered to keep the peace and not participate in any protests that block roads, railways or other thoroughfares on or off Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. He will appear in court again June 26. Brant is charged with mischief, disobeying a court order and breach of recognizance in connection with a 30-hour blockade of a Canadian National rail line April 20. The warrant for his arrest was issued five days later.

Deseronto quarry blocked by Mohawk protest

Aboriginal protesters blocked access to a quarry in Deseronto, Ont., on Wednesday and handed out pamphlets to passing motorists during a peaceful protest over disputed land. Shawn Brant, a spokesman for the approximately 20 Mohawk protesters, said the group erected the barricades after hearing a Kingston, Ont., developer would begin construction of a house on land claimed by the Mohawks of the nearby Tyendinaga Territory on Wednesday.
