OPP clash with Mohawk protesters; Police make several arrests near disputed quarry north of Deseronto
Several Mohawk protesters were arrested here yesterday following a wild skirmish that ended in a tense, armed standoff. Dozens of heavily armed Ontario Provincial Police officers clashed with Mohawk protesters just north of the Thurlow Aggregates quarry, which Mohawks have been occupying for more than one year. The standoff began peacefully with officers and Mohawks talking quietly after the arrest earlier in the afternoon of Mohawk protest leader Shawn Brant on charges unrelated to yesterday’s melee.

Native protesters who seized a major portion of this small Hastings County town pledged Monday to maintain the disruption for a week to send a message to any would-be developers of disputed native lands. “Not another shovel in the ground,” said protest spokesman Dan Doreen, standing outside a roadway blockade of Old Highway 2 on the eastern fringe of town. “That mandate was set in 2006 and it still stands – we’re here to protect our land and that’s it,” promised Doreen, who was clad in camouflage with a red bandana tied around his left arm.

On Monday, April 14th, a trial involving highly political charges laid against Shawn Brant and two other Mohawks from Tyendinaga, ended in acquittals for two of the three charged. The charges stemmed from a demonstration that was part of the struggle for the Culbertson Tract. Shawn Brant was found not guilty on Monday on three charges of uttering threats at soldiers during a 2006 demonstration against a proposed development on Mohawk land. Justice Charles Anderson, in Napanee, Ont., also cleared his co-accused Jerome Barnhart on two charges of uttering threats and one charge of mischief. Mario ‘Skin’ Baptiste Jr., was convicted of two counts of assault soldiers and one count of mischief for attacking a vehicle. Sentencing of Skin will occur after the completion of a pre-sentencing report, which could take eight weeks to prepare.

DESERONTO — A Kingston-area developer whose actions have launched numerous protests in the Deseronto area returned to his land Thursday to forge ahead with his $35-million plan. And once again Tim Letch, president of Intergroup Financing AG, was met with opposition from native protesters. Letch said it was not long after he and a handful of his workers arrived on the site to do some soil testing that “a band of brothers came out of the woods†informing them the land belonged to them.
