Protestors opposed to a proposed coalbed methane project in a remote and sacred corner of the province could be in a Vancouver courtroom later this week after lawyers for oil and gas giant Royal Dutch Shell filed an injunction seeking to have them forcibly removed from the site last Thursday. The dispute is the latest skirmish in a lengthy battle over mining and gas drilling in northwest B.C. Local First Nations and environmental groups have repeatedly clashed with companies hoping to cash in on the area’s rich bounty of natural resources.

Shell Blockaded in Tahltan Territory

Posted by admin on Aug 24th, 2007

August 22 (Iskut, BC): Members of the Iskut First Nation blockaded Royal Dutch Shell yesterday, preventing the company from gaining access to the Sacred Headwaters (Klappan) area to resume its coalbed methane project. The blockaders are opposed to Shell’s project because they fear it will damage their traditional territory, which they depend on for hunting and trapping.

First Nations elders from Iskut first evicted Shell from their territory in 2005. Shell cancelled last summer’s drilling program due to widespread opposition. Last month, 14 environmental groups including Greenpeace, Sierra Club, NRDC, and the David Suzuki Foundation sent a letter to Shell urging the company to back off its coalbed methane plan in the Sacred Headwaters. The Intelligencer By Samantha Craggs, Thursday, July 05, 2007

NAPANEE — Not even the honour of Shawn Brant’s mother could keep the Mohawk activist out of jail on new charges of mischief and breach of recognizance. Brant’s mother Deanna, a retired teacher, took the stand at Brant’s bail hearing Thursday, offering a $50,000 surety that Brant would not plan, incite or participate in illegal protests between now and his court date.
