We know you already know that the 2010 Olympics are only a few short months away and are well aware that the Games are having a devastating impact on our communities – from traditional Indigenous territories to the Downtown Eastside, from migrant workers to low-income families, thousands are being evicted, displaced, and exploited. It is undeniable that the Olympics is causing the devastation of the environment, creating homelessness, perpetuating the theft of Indigenous lands, exploiting migrant labour, forcing greater privatization, accruing massive public debt, and resulting in increased state criminalization.

With Olympics Came New Laws to Sweep up Homeless

The controversial Assisting to Shelter Act has not been approved yet, but critics say the proposed provincial law has a familiar, and troubling, ring to it. Vancouver could be joining a long list of Olympic host cities that passed legislation close to the Games allowing governments to clear the streets of the poor, homeless and addicted just in time for the tourists and cameras to arrive. The act would give Vancouver police the power to force a person to seek shelter when an extreme weather alert is issued. If there is no room at city shelters, people will be put in a jail cell.

The Vancouver-Whistler 2010 Winter Olympics are just around the corner, it’s time to take some action! While governments and corporations continue to steal unceded indigenous land, spend billions of dollars in rights repressing security measures, destroy the environment, criminalize poverty, and make a profit out of all this; people all over are resisting! It’s time to join the struggle against these colonial, capitalist, greedy and repressive games!

The Ancient Olympic Games were held in Greece every four years and celebrated culture as much as sports. The founder of the modern Olympic movement, Pierre de Coubertin, placed an emphasis on culture as well, making it the “second pillar” of the Olympics, equal to sports. In the early 20th Century, the second pillar was honoured by hosting arts competitions that involved medals and featured art inspired by sport. In 1954 the art competitions were abandoned, leaving the second pillar’s future uncertain.
