Protesters say they will keep torch and RCMP out of Six Nations

The Olympic Torch is coming to Six Nations next week but a group opposing the run say they plan to protest it, but wont provide details and told the media to leave their meeting after claiming it was a public meeting. The sent out a declaration Monday claiming they would peacefully protest the torch run. Turtle Island News sources said the protesters plan to be at Highway 6, Middleport and along Chiefswood Road when the torch arrives, The group met at the old council House last Wednesday. They said they were opposed to the run and some claimed it was dividing the community.

Security cameras here to stay, critic says

Micheal Vonn, policy director of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, does not believe Vancouver’s 100 new closed-circuit television cameras will be shelved after the conclusion of the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Installation of the cameras at various downtown locations was announced Monday afternoon by the city and will take place over the next two months. The cameras are set to go live Feb. 1 and be shut down March 28.

Is the Olympics’ use of Indigenous symbolism imprudent?

VICTORIA, BC—The inclusion of colonial narratives has forever been enshrined within the Olympic formula, and Indigenous peoples have long served the performance needs of nations whose histories rest in imperial conquest. Canada is no exception. On three occasions, including 1976 Montreal, 1988 Calgary and 2010 Vancouver, Canada has been afforded the opportunity to host the coveted Olympic Games. In each instance the inclusion of Indigenous cultures, and their complimentary images, has been a prominent countenance of the Games. However, this inclusion has not always been celebrated, nor unquestioningly accepted, by the Indigenous peoples.

With less than three months to go before the 2010 Olympics open in Whistler, activists are protesting the curtailing of civil liberties and the “cleansing” of poor and homeless people off Vancouver’s streets. It’s not the first time authorities have attempted to suppress “undesirables” in the lead-up to an Olympics held in Canada. With the RCMP’s help, police began cracking down on gays and lesbians a year before the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics.
