On Friday August 31, Shell Canada will be seeking an injunction in Vancouver’s BC Supreme Court to have the Elders of the Iskut and Telegraph communities forcibly removed and arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. This is the latest in the ongoing struggle to oppose Shell Canada’s Coal-bed Methane exploration project in the Sacred Headwaters of the Stikine, Skeena and Nass River watershed.

Laibar Singh Arrested While in Hospital

Abbottsford police and Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers have arrested Mr. Laiber Singh, a paralyzed Punjabi refugee claimant who has been in sanctuary since July 7 at Abbortsford Sahib Kalgidhar Darbar Gurudwara.

The arrest was made late last night at MSA Hospital in Abbotsford, where Mr. Singh has been since Thursday August 9 on the advice of his physician. On Monday night at approximately 10 pm, close to 20-30 uniformed officers, border services agents, and undercover officers arrived at the hospital to arrest Mr. Singh. Temple President Swaran Singh Gill, who was with Mr. Singh at the time, was not allowed to make any phone calls, including to legal counsel, and was led to believe that he too would face arrest.

Canadian International Trade Minister David Emerson, U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab, and Mexico’s Secretary of the Economy Eduardo Sojo will be having a meeting of the NAFTA Free Trade Commission in Vancouver this week. NAFTA has become a symbol of the devastation, poverty, and repression created by neoliberal free trade agreements. This meeting comes just days before the Security and Prosperity Partnership Summit in Montebello Quebec, where Bush, Harper, and Calderon will be negotiating a NAFTA 2.0-plus-Homeland-Security agenda.
