Celebrating Resistance!

No One Is Illegal invites you to an informal end-of-year gathering to celebrate resistance, our collective victories, and the struggle ahead particularly against the 2010 Olympics. Come hangout, let us get to know one another; this is an informal gathering. We will be screening a video by Vancouver Media Coop from the Anti-Olympic Speakers Corner we hosted last month, as well as a series of other short, informative and inspiring videos. Followed by music and enjoy food from Rhizome’s menu (including pay-what-you-feel yummy lentil stew). Let us build solidarity and strength for the year ahead!

Supporters, Allies, and Friends, We have some news. Jason Kenney is coming to town. That’s right — our  favourite racist Immigration Minister will be in Vancouver TOMORROW  (Saturday November 14th) and we’re getting ready to welcome him in style.  Join us!

WHERE? Marine Drive Global Lounge (Bldg #1), Marine Drive Residence @ UBC. See map.
WHEN? 3.15 PM with free pizza! Organized by the UBC Campus Conservatives. OR MEET US: We will be meeting at the UBC Bus Loop (at the 99BLine  stop) at 2.15 PM and will leave at 2.30 to walk down to the residences. Join No One is Illegal-Vancouver in a National Day of Action to call for the immediate release of detained asylum seekers and an end to racist and restrictive immigration policies! Surviving a long and arduous journey, 76 Tamil Migrants are currently being detained and imprisoned after arriving on Vancouver shores in pursuit of a safer future. All remain in detention, with minimal access to community and legal support in contravention of their basic human rights, while Canadian Immigration Minister Jason Kenney perpetuates false and dehumanizing stereotypes of asylum-seekers as ‘illegals’, ‘criminals’, and so-called queue jumpers.

H2Oil: Film and Panel at VIFF

H2Oil, a challenge to the unregulated development of AlbertaÂ’s oil sands, will have its West Coast premiere on Sunday, October 11th and Monday October 12thth as part of the Vancouver International Film FestivalÂ’s The Way of Nature section. The environmental battle over the oil sands is going global. The news of H2OilÂ’s Vancouver premiere comes on the heels of major mounting international opposition from Norway to Washington.  Just this month, a delegation from Fort Chipewyan stirred up headlines at the Climate Camp in London as they targeted the “corporate climate criminals”, such as British Petroleum, and the banks that back the oil sands. All this in the wake of China’s $1.9-billion investment into Alberta means that bitumen – its lucrative and its destructive sides – seems to be on everyone’s minds.
