Diana Thompson took a moment to compose herself before answering questions about the fate of her husband – one of eight men arrested in last week’s Canada Border Services raid. She paused, inhaled sharply and blinked back a few tears as she admitted she was nervous about visiting Tulio Renan Avilés-Hernandez in detention in Maple Ridge Thursday. It would be the first time she’d seen him since the raid that ignited a national controversy because it was filmed for the reality TV show: Border Security: Canada’s Front Line. Thompson said Thursday morning she was preparing for an emotional shock. “We’re not going to be able to hug each other and touch each other … it’s going to be through a glass window,” she said. “I think it’s going to be more real.”

The decision by federal officials, including Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, to allow an immigration raid to be filmed for a reality TV series has drawn public outrage — and now a formal complaint to the federal Privacy Commissioner. The British Columbia Civil Liberties Association lodged the complaint Thursday against the Canada Border Services Agency, on behalf of Oscar Mata Duran, one of the eight arrested migrant workers, for breaching his privacy rights under Canadian laws.

We are writing to you regarding decisions made by the Ministry of Public Safety with respect to the recent Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) raids at construction sites in Vancouver. According to federal access to information documents, on June 7, 2011 your signature and approval were given to Force Four Entertainment’s proposal to produce a reality television series focused on the work of the CBSA. On March 13, 2013, the arrest of several undocumented workers in Vancouver was filmed and broadcast.

National Geographic Channel Following several weeks of Senate scandals in Ottawa, Vancouver got its own fair share of federal political controversy in the media last week after a reality TV raid on unauthorized migrant workers led by the Canada Border Services Agency was carried out at construction sites. An outcry of protest ensued across the country with many people aghast over a little-known TV show that would exploit the lives of vulnerable people for ratings.

Complaint filed with federal privacy watchdog over on-camera immigration raid

VANCOUVER – A migrant worker who unwittingly starred in a reality television show about Canadian border guards was already back in Mexico on Thursday, when a rights group filed an official complaint with the federal privacy watchdog over his treatment at the hands of the Canada Borders Services Agency. In the complaint, Oscar Mata Duran said he felt a surge of adrenaline March 13 when about a dozen immigration officers pulled up at his Vancouver low-rise condo construction site with a television camera in tow.
