Migrant Labour Roundtable
No One is Illegal-Vancouver is organizing a roundtable on the issue of migrant labour in Canada on Saturday April 21st from 11:30 am-5:30 pm at 515 West Hastings. There is limited space and registration is required by Friday April 20 at noon.
The goal of this roundtable is not to debate the pros and cons of migrant worker programs. We believe there is a growing consensus and understanding that given the inherent structural flaws of guest worker/migrant worker programs, such programs should not exist. Instead, we believe that any solution or alternatives that are envisioned to such programs must take into account how current immigration/refugee laws and increasingly restrictive Canadian border policies fuel the exploitation inherent within guest worker programs. Therefore the goal of the roundtable is to close the day with an understanding of the connections between labour, capital, and citizenship and to establish concrete proposals for more just migration and labour policy.
In order to achieve this, the roundtable will bring together representatives and individuals from the both the US and Canada and from a wide variety of experiences and sectors, including migrant workers, immigrant workers, community groups, unions, grassroots advocates, and researchers who work in solidarity with migrant worker struggles.
The roundtable has limited space, so we request that you register as soon as possible. Registration fees are $5-10 (free for those who are currently migrant workers). Please register by emailing noii-van at resist.ca or call 778 885 0040/ 778 840 2009.
