In September 2005, 15 Tahltan Elders were arrested at Klappan Mountain in the struggle to protect the Sacred headWaters of the Stikine, Skeena and Nass Rivers. The Tahltan elders are in serious opposition to industrial development by Shell Oil and Fortune Minerals. The elders did this to protect their lands and people against Fortune Mineral’s open pit coal mine and Shell’s coalbed methane proposals. The Tahltan Elders and youth were arrested when an RCMP injunction was granted against the tahltan blockade.

The Tahltan Elders that were arrested have court dates in Terrace on October 31st for a hearing and sentencing. There are several events being planned around this day. There will be a large rally the day before the hearing and sentencing on October 30th, hosted by the Tahltan people at 12:30 pm, at the Kitsumkalum community, 3 km’s west of Terrace.

Coscuya-Annita McPhee, from the Tahltan Nation is coordinating a “Tahltan Caravan” of local Vancouver-based supporters to drive to Terrace to support the tahltan elders at their court hearing. The group will be leaving on Saturday, October 29th, from Vancouver and they will arrive in Terrace on October 30th, for the rally. The group is kindly requesting funds for gas, food and accommodation.

Annita is coordinating this fundraiser to raise funds for the “Tahltan Caravan” to go to Terrace. A booth will be set up during West Coast Night at the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre on Wednesday, October 26th, 2005, with information about the Tahltan’s struggle with mining and development in their territory. People will have a chance to donate at this time as well.

For more Information, please contact Annita McPhee at 604 873-9113 or 604 876-9965.
