MIGRATION & POVERTY
PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION
Thurs June 21st, 2007 @ 6:00pm
Room 2270, SFU Harbour Centre 515 West Hastings

Migration and Poverty is a project that No One Is Illegal – Vancouver has undertaken in order to better understand the how poverty impacts migrant communities in Canada.

There is a vital need to initiate a dialogue about the poverty of migrants and refugees within Canada, as well as recognize the struggles against poverty- and its roots in colonization and neoliberal economic policies- that force the migration of individuals from the Global South.

This project aims to provide an understanding of the ways that concrete policies such as immigration law, employment standards, and social assistance regulations deepen the experience of migrant poverty within Canada, which is further compounded by the impact of systemic racism within Canadian society. An understanding of these policies can demonstrate how a wide range of state regulations and processes actively perpetuate the poverty and marginalization of racialized migrants in Canada.

Ultimately the struggle against poverty in Canada will be strengthened by incorporating the voices and experiences of migrants and refugees. We hope you can join us for discussion and analysis as well as to learn more about the on going work within this Project for those interested in getting involved.
