Canadian police and border agents are searching for a Chilean man who bolted to freedom at Pearson airport as he was being deported from Canada. A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for the suspect, whose identity has not been released by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

Officers said the suspect, who was in Canada illegally, escaped about three weeks ago, but the CBSA did not provide the public with information at the time about the incident.

Witnesses said guards transporting the suspect from an immigration detention centre, on Rexdale Blvd., to the airport were distracted by his “family members” and failed to see the suspect bolt.

The suspect was in Terminal 1 waiting to board a flight to Santiago when he took off, witnesses said.

The suspect had just had his handcuffs removed by guards in preparation of boarding a flight, they said.

CBSA officials said the escape was only made public this week following questions by Sun Media. There has been about four escapes at the airport and detention centre by illegal immigrants being deported during the last two years.

CBSA spokesman Antonella DiGirolamo confirmed the suspect fled as he was being removed.

“The individual in question does not have any criminal convictions and we are committed to finding him and completing his removal,” DiGirolamo said in an e-mail.
