Alberta counter-terror unit set up to protect the oil sands

EDMONTON — The federal government has set up a counter-terrorism unit in Alberta and one of its main jobs will be to help protect the energy industry from attacks by extremists. The integrated national security enforcement team will be led by the RCMP and include officers from CSIS, the Edmonton and Calgary police forces and federal border patrol. Assistant Commissioner Gilles Michaud said the key to effectively guarding the labyrinth of oil and natural gas wells, pipelines and refineries in Alberta will be to gather intelligence to prevent attacks before they happen.

CSIS may use intelligence derived from torture, Toews says

The federal government is defending itself after more information has come to light about its directions to Canada’s spy agency to use information that may have been extracted through torture in cases where public safety is at stake. The order represents a reversal of policy for the Conservative government, which once insisted the Canadian Security Intelligence Service would discard information if there was any inkling it might be tainted. Opposition MPs seized on the news, saying it means the government is indirectly supporting torture.

Arab Spring Intel docs show Canada’s concern over refugees

In the early days of the Arab Spring the Canada Border Service Agency(CBSA) created a series of Intelligence Bulletins on popular unrest in the Middle East and the Maghreb focused on the potential for refugee claims that might ensue. The reports came after uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt in early 2011 and assessed “the short term potential for unrest in selected countries, and provides a threat rating in relation to potential impact on CBSA activities should situations become critical.” They were based on information from a variety of sources including public documents and information provided by both the Integrated Terrorism Assessment Centre(ITAC) and foreign agencies.

Organizations Launch Campaign of Non-Cooperation with Canadian Spy Agency: “Don’t Talk, Don’t Listen” to CSIS

Montreal, 29 January 2012 — Almost seventy organizations (see below) have joined a call to end all cooperation with Canada’s spy agency, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). On the initiative of the Montreal-based People’s Commission Network, the campaign of total non-cooperation with CSIS was publicly launched at a press conference today. The organizations advise their members to neither speak nor listen to CSIS agents.
