Reportback: National Day of Action Against Jason Kenney

Posted by admin on Jul 28th, 2010

On July 24, hundreds took to the streets in Burnaby/Vancouver to oppose Minister of Censorship and Deportation. Under his regime, deportations have increased, while the number of people accepted as refugees and sponsored family members have drastically dropped. Instead, Kenney has increased the number of temporary workers who are constantly exploited for their labour. Kenney is also a staunch supporter of imperialism, supporting the occupations of Afghanistan and Palestine. Finally, he is responsible for perpetuating oppression against queers and women through substantive public policy changes.

No One Is Illegal at the G8/G20 Mobilizations in Toronto

Posted by admin on Jun 22nd, 2010

Joint Statement of No One Is Illegal Toronto, No One Is Illegal Vancouver, No One Is Illegal Halifax, No One Is Illegal Montreal, No One Is Illegal Ottawa

No Fences, No Borders!
No One Is Illegal, Canada Is Illegal!

As most of you have heard, from June 25th to 27th the world’s richest countries (the G8 and G20) will send their poli-trickers and banking elite, along with heads of the EU, IMF and World Bank, to meet in Huntsville and then in Toronto. They will be talking bailouts, corporate green-washing, and how to further deepen their own and their friends’ pockets. The G8 and G20 countries and their corporations make most of the weapons on the planet, profit from war, subsidize oil corporations and massive industrial projects, and are responsible for pushing millions out of their homes each year. Migrants arriving in G20 countries are treated as exploitable labour – fenced in to precarious work – and often living in fear of detention and deportation.

Reclaiming Pride and Challenging White Privilege in Queer Organizing

Posted by admin on Apr 20th, 2010

For queer indigenous and queer people of colour, challenging white privilege within queer movements, while challenging homophobia and transphobia within more mainstream anti-racist spaces, is an ongoing task. As Audre Lorde writes, “there is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives.” Yet this division of our communities and allegiances is a typical colonialist strategy within a white settler state such as Canada. It not only breaks up our movements and the force of our resistances, but breaks those bodies marginalized on multiple fronts, making them disappear.

The double impacts of racism and homophobia are felt on numerous levels. In Vancouver, and in the aftermath of the attack on communities launched by the Winter Olympics, the devastating impacts of oppression are palpable. While billions (the overall cost of the games is now estimated at $ 6 billion) were spent on a two week spectacle and party for the elite, large-scale evictions and homelessness were the reality for others. As part of the plan to clean up and secure the city in the name of nationalism and corporate greed, undesirable or dissenting communities experienced the fear and force of heightened surveillance and policing on their bodies.

No One Is Illegal Confronts Minister Kenney Again!

Posted by admin on Nov 17th, 2009

On November 14, 2009, No One Is Illegal-Vancouver (Coast Salish Territories) activists, supporters, and allies confronted Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney at the University of British Columbia. Kenney was invited to speak to the UBC Campus Conservatives but did not receive a warm welcome, as his talk was continuously disrupted by a barrage of questions and confrontation regarding Canada’s racist immigration policy. There was a heavy presence of security and police at the event, in anticipation of alleged ‘security threats’ and ‘disruptions’ based on a tip that NOII-Van had called allies to mobilize around Kenney’s arrival.

The Strategy Behind Israel’s Migrant Labor Policies

Posted by admin on Aug 20th, 2009

By YONATAN PREMINGER, Counterpunch, Aug 20

As an increasing number of people feel the grip of the global financial crisis, Israel’s familiar bugbear has been wheeled out yet again: deport the foreign workers! True to form, the newly appointed Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz has decided that the deportation of 100,000 migrant laborers will improve the economic situation. We’ve been here before. In 2003, Israel launched its first major campaign to reduce the number of “foreign workers,” as they are known in Hebrew (ovdim zarim). Now the workers are preparing themselves for another round of brutal operations by the infamous immigration police.
