Court Support for Jose Figueroa Postponed

Posted by admin on Jun 26th, 2014

The Federal Court hearing scheduled for July 2 has been postponed due to the death of a different judge — the judge hearing Jose Figueroa’s case has flown east for the funeral.

We will let you know when the new date is set. When the hearing takes place, we will gather outside the court house again, and show our support for Jose Figueroa, who remains in sanctuary due to an unjust deportation order.

Background:

After a considerable delay caused by a “clerical mistake” on the part of Immigration Canada, the Federal Court of Canada recently heard the judicial review of Jose Figueroa’s case versus the Minister of Immigrationand Citizenship.

Jose Figueroa was member of a university student union that supported the opposition Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN)—the current elected government of El Salvador. The FMLN opposed a murderous right-wing dictatorship which was notorious for the use of death squads and torture to silence any opposition, leading to almost 80,000 deaths. The decision to deport Jose has been widely criticized, and despite strong community support, he was forced to claim sanctuary at Walnut Grove Lutheran Church in October 2013, where he has remained for over eight months now.
